Kardashev Scale

A method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement based on its energy consumption.

The Kardashev scale is a method of classifying the technological level of a civilization based on the amount of energy it is able to harness and utilize. Proposed by Soviet astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, it originally comprised three main types: Type I, II, and III. A Type I civilization can harness all the energy available on its home planet, including solar energy reaching the planet, geothermal, wind, and tidal power. A Type II civilization can harness the total energy output of its parent star, often conceptualized through megastructures like a Dyson sphere. A Type III civilization can harness the energy output of its entire host galaxy. The scale is logarithmic, meaning each successive type represents a significant increase in energy utilization capabilities. While the original scale focused on energy, extensions have been proposed, such as the Rating scale, which considers factors like communication speed, computational power, and colonization range. The scale serves as a theoretical framework for SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) by suggesting potential observable signatures of advanced civilizations.
