Hardware wallets are considered the gold standard for cryptocurrency security.

### How it works:
1. Offline Keys: Private keys are generated and stored inside the device's secure element chip.
2. Transaction Signing: When you send crypto, the unsigned transaction is sent to the device. You enter a PIN and confirm on the device. It signs it internally and sends the signed data back to the computer.
3. Recovery Phrase: During setup, you get a 12-24 word seed phrase. This must be written down on paper (not digital!) as a backup.

### Best Practices:
- Never buy a used hardware [wallet](/de/terms/hardware-wallet).
- Never type your seed phrase into a computer/phone.
- Keep the recovery phrase fire/water proof.
