Filecoin is built on top of IPFS. While IPFS allows for finding data, Filecoin provides the incentive for people to actually store it. Miners earn FIL tokens by providing their spare hard drive space to users. It aims to compete with centralized giants like Amazon S3 or Google Cloud by being cheaper and more secure.
