What is instruction-set?

The interface between software and hardware that defines the set of basic operations a processor can perform.

An Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) is the abstract model of a computer. It defines the machine language instructions, registers, data types, and memory architecture. It acts as the contract between software developers (or compiler writers) and hardware engineers.

An instruction set is like the rulebook for a board game. It tells you what moves are allowed, what the pieces are, and how the game is played. Different processors (like x86 or ARM) use different rulebooks.

🤓 Expert Deep Dive

x86 (CISC) uses complex, variable-length instructions, while ARM (RISC) uses simpler, fixed-length instructions for energy efficiency. Modern ISAs are typically 64-bit and include extensions for vector processing (AVX, NEON) and virtualization.
