What is grid-computing?
A distributed computing architecture that coordinates networked resources to achieve a common computational goal.
Grid computing links together thousands of independent computers across the world into one giant virtual supercomputer. Each machine in the 'grid' contributes its unused processing power or storage to solve massive scientific or mathematical problems that are too big for any single machine to handle.

Grid computing is like a giant school project where 1,000 students each do one small part of the work at their own homes. When they all finish and put their parts together, they have completed a project so big that not even the smartest student in the world could have done it alone.

Grid computing differs from cluster computing because grid resources are often heterogeneous (not identical) and geographically dispersed. It was the precursor to cloud computing. Famous examples include SETI@home and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data processing grid.
