Based on the Alcubierre metric, the ship itself does not 'move' through space faster than light; rather, the space around it moves. This bypasses the Special Relativity limit because the expansion of spacetime itself is not restricted by the speed of light. However, the model requires 'negative energy' provided by exotic matter (Casimir effect) to keep the bubble stable. Recent refinements by Harold White suggest that a 'toroidal' bubble geometry could significantly reduce the energy requirements from Solar System levels to the mass-energy of a small spacecraft.
