Technically, DHCP operates through a four-step process called 'DORA': 1. 'Discover' (Client broadcasts to find a server). 2. 'Offer' (Server offers an IP). 3. 'Request' (Client accepts the offer). 4. 'Acknowledge' (Server confirms the lease). DHCP uses UDP ports 67 (server) and 68 (client). An important concept is the 'Reservation' (or Static DHCP), where a specific MAC address is always assigned the same IP, useful for printers or servers. In larger networks, 'DHCP Relay' agents are used to pass requests across different subnets. Security-wise, 'DHCP Starvation' attacks occur when a hacker requests every available IP address, preventing real users from joining the network.
